The kusarigama has a longer range than the katana and can be swung upwards diagonally and horizontally, but can only damage enemies from a specific distance and does not work as well at close range like the katana. The player's default weapon is a katana, which can be traded for a kusarigama and vice versa. If the player has more than half of their vitality remaining, they can perform a special attack by holding a button for an extended period, summoning a thunderstorm that will damage all on-screen enemies, but at the cost of roughly half of their maximum vitality. The player can run, crouch, climb ladders, attack, and jump like in most side-scrolling action games as well as hang onto an overhang and move under it. There are no actual performance differences between either character. In either mode, the player can decide which character they want to control before the game begins. Some stages have minor bosses at the end, and each level ends with a major boss these take quite a lot damage but most can be defeated with careful, repeated tactics. Most can be dispatched fairly easily, but the toll to your health bar becomes apparent if careful strategy is not employed. These vary from bog standard grunts, to water leaping ninjas, gun totting robots and mutant monkeys. Collecting the same weapon as that which you already wield powers it up, although taking too much damage can reduce it back one level.Įach stage has a variety of enemies present depending on its theme, all looking to knock your health level to zero. To make this a fair fight you are merely equipped with a katana to begin with however, opening certain containers in each level can reveal a kusarigama (which replaces the katana) or a limited number of shuriken stars that can hit at range. The game is set over five levels, split into either three or four stages each.
